Smateria products are made from recycled or re-purposed materials including nylon mosquito nets, plastic bags, motorcycle seats, and drink cartons which are all sourced locally. Smateria is a self-financed social enterprise that employs both able bodied and disabled people with 85% of its employees being young women between the ages 20 and 30. Where possible Smateria attempts to employ members of the same family. This enables knowledge to be passed between each family member. Basic training is provided to the family members for free and sewing machines are provided by Smateria on a rent to own agreement. The cost of each machine is repaid monthly, interest free.
