Institute of Biology of National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyz Republic
The Institute of Biology in Bishkek(IBB) is the oldest scientific institution in the Kyrgyz Republic. It was established in 1943. Forest Research and Development Center N/A Prof. Peter Hahn (formerly Forest Institute of Kyrgyz Nat. Acad. Sci.) was affiliated in 2018. There are 13 departments (“laboratories”) in the structure of IBB, with 138 scientific employees (among them 7 have Dr. Sci. degree and 28 PhD).
IBB is conducting next priority directions:
- study of diversity of macro-organisms (plants, fungi, and animals) of the Kyrgyz Republic, particularly in poorly investigated areas and in operable and planned protected natural territories;
- monitoring of the wild nature, conservation of rare and endangered species, replenishment of bio-resources and its sustainable usage;
- complex ecological and bio-geo-chemical assessment of the modern state of mountain ecosystems (uranium and other natural-and-technological provinces);
- development of scientific base for the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in natural and artificial reservoirs;
- elaboration of technology for the production and application of microbial agents based on decomposer strains, aimed toward the soil sanitation and for plant protection (pest control);
There is conducted out ecological and bio-geo-chemical and radiological assessment of the modern state of mountain ecosystems, such as uranium and other natural-and-technological provinces (Kadji-Sai, Aidarken, Kadamjai, Tchu Valley etc.). Territory of the country is mapped and patterned in this aspect; sites with higher and low content of radionuclides and some other elements are determined.
IBB is the depository institution of significant collections of animals and herbaria of vascular plants and micromycetes. There is inter-museum co-operation with bio-taxonomical centers in Russian, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Switzerland, France, Hungary, Germany, Austria etc. Zoological Museum of the IBB (formerly Kyrgyz Museum of Local History, was founded at May 30, 1926) realizes educational tasks. Another one structural IBB division is the Issyk-Kul Biological Station (aged over half a century).
IBB staff has published over 100 monographs (including four volumes of the “Cadastre of Biodiversity”, 1st and 2nd editions of Red Data Book) and received more than 70 copyright certificates and patents. Some IBB employees are participants in international projects (e.g. IAEA, ISTC, FAO, GEF, JICA) and state programs.
At 2018–19, IBB supervised for 4 aspirants, 6 doctoral and 17 candidate research students. Under “CIS nuclear community XXI” Project network magistracies "Physics" and "Ecology and environmental management" (in profiles Radioecology and Radiobiology) are organized.
