Brief Bio
Dr Didier BAZILE is a Senior Scientist based at CIRAD, Montpellier (FR). An Agronomist, Didier is an active researcher in agroecology with a focus on agrobiodiversity and plant genetic resources. He received a Ph.D. in Rural Geography (Toulouse, 1998) and was graduated as Director of Research (HdR) (Montpellier, 2014), working about Natural Resources Management considering both conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. After different international experiences (Africa, Asia, South America) for the European Union, the World Bank Group and French Ministries, he joined the CIRAD in 2001 as Principal Scientist where he develops an ecosystem approach for in situ conservation and promotes participatory research with a particular focus on gender dimensions. From 2008 to 2012, he took the position of Associated Professor of the Institute of Geography (PUCV, Valparaiso, Chile) and headed the Biodiversity Laboratory. He worked in close collaboration with the two GIAHS sites (Chiloé Agriculture, Chile and Andean Agriculture, Peru) for characterizing genetic resources and traditional knowledge in biocultural landscapes. His research are always oriented for enhancing the benefits derived from conservation for local communities. He developed a specific analysis on the crucial role of "curadoras" in the conservation of quinoa varieties in the Mapuche communities in southern Chile analyzing specific forms of social organization and their importance for maintaining agricultural heritage. During 2014-2016, he was invited at FAO-HQ to serve as Visiting Expert. During this time, he supported the preparation and animation of an informal stakeholder dialogue on a global networking mechanism on in situ conservation and on farm management of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA). As an expert, he regularly evaluates projects for international donors and gives invited conferences. The GIAHS Secretariat has invited him on several occasions to share his experience with the Scientific Advisory Group. After three years as Cirad Regional Director for the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Balkans regions, he was appointed as CIRAD Biodiversity Advisor. He wants to integrate his experience on multilevel and multiples actors dialogues for facilitating new partnerships considering all actors and, in particular women.
