Brief Bio

Dr. Shafi Noor Islam is Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Development Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), University of Brunei Darussalam, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam. He hold PhD in Environmental and Resource Management (ERM (2009) from the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, Germany (PhD Thesis: Cultural Landscape Changing due to Anthropogenic Influences on Surface Water and Threats to Mangrove Wetland Ecosystems: a Case study on the Sundarbans, Bangladesh). He also holds his MA degree in World Heritage Studies from the same university from Germany. Dr. Islam was working as Lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin, and Lecturer of Euro Aquae Hydro-Informatics of Erasmus Mondus at the BTU Cottbus, Germany. He also worked as visiting lecturer at the Halmstad University, Sweden.

He has Postdoctoral experiences and presently is a candidate for Habilitation (Dr.rer.nat.habil.) on the dissertation topic “Ecosystem Services and Food Security under Threat in the Mega Deltas of Asian Coastal Regions: An Analysis on the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna Rivers Delta” at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, Germany. He has teaching and research affiliations and collaboration with impressive universities such as Universite Paris-Est, Arizona State University USA and National University of Mexico (UNAM), Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), Free Universität Berlin (FU Berlin), Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg) Germany, Lund University Sweden, Karlstads Universitet and Halmstad Universitet Sweden, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universitas Tanjungpura, Indonesia.

His research focused in Brunei on Remote Sensing (RS) and GIS application on Rainforest management, detecting of forest fire, Tropical wetlands ecosystems, Landcover and Landuse planning and sustainability issues. Besides he has research experiences on Kampong Ayer (Water Village) and the current research project is carrying out on Kampong Parit in Brunei. Heritage Management of Kampong Ayer and The Prospects and Challenges of Heritage Tourism in Kampong Ayer are remarkable publications on Brunei. His main activities are in interdisciplinary water resource research on water salinity and mangrove ecosystems modelling. Mega delta ecosystem services, Tangible and Intangible Heritage conservation, climate change impacts on food security and ecosystem services are his focus research fields. He has published over 100 articles in international journals and as book chapters as well as published 2 books.
