Brief Bio
Sérgio Henrique Faria (Dr.rer.nat. Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany, 2003) is Ikerbasque Professor at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), Spain, and Adjoint Presidential Professor at the Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT), Japan. He is coordinator of the BC3 research line "Climate Basis", director of the "IzotzaLab" (BC3's low-temperature science laboratory), and head of the section "Climate Change, Environment and Human Well-Being" of the Doctorate Programme "Quaternary: Environmental Change and Human Ecological Footprint" of the University of the Basque Country (EHU). He is also European coordinator of the "Top Global University Project: GIGAKU Education Programme for Innovative Global Engineers" (TGU-GIGAKU) led by NUT and funded by the Japanese government. Sérgio Henrique has been associate scientist at EPICA-DML (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica, Dronning Maud Land Sector) and currently is associate scientist at EastGRIP (East Greenland Ice-core Project).
His research interests are very diverse, ranging from Earth and planetary sciences to social dynamics and the multiscale modelling of complex systems. As a physicist and glaciologist, he has participated in many expeditions to Antarctica, Greenland, and high-mountain regions, mainly for drilling ice cores, studying the physics of ice, and investigating the effects of climate change on extreme environments.
Sérgio Henrique is Scientific Editor and former Associate Chief Editor of Journal of Glaciology (International Glaciological Society and Cambridge University Press) and editorial board member of Scientific Reports (Nature Research). He is author of the book "The EPICA-DML Deep Ice Core - A Visual Record" (Springer), and has been Lead Author and Contributing Author of the 6th Assessment Report, Working Group 1 (AR6-WG1) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
