Dr. Hussain is a Pakistani national. He is academically trained development economist with a PhD from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand, from which he had earlier earned a Master’s degree in the same subject. Before this, he completed the Superior Qualification in banking and finance from the Institute of Banking Pakistan. He also has a Bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan.
Dr. Hussain has expertise and work experience in agricultural credit, commercial and micro-finance, food and nutrition security, poverty, mountain economy and climate change adaptation. Currently, he is working as Food Security Economist at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Nepal. This Centre is a regional intergovernmental learning and knowledge sharing centre serving the eight regional member countries of the Hindu Kush Himalayas (HKH)—Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan— and the global mountain community. In his current role at ICIMOD, Dr. Hussain is involved in research, policy and practice within his areas of expertise. He has significantly contributed to policies and programmes of HKH countries on food security, rural transformation and climate change adaptation. He is also supervising or examining the research of young researchers and Master and PhD students from different universities. In total, he has 17 years of work experience, eight of which are at ICIMOD.
Prior to joining ICIMOD, he served as Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics in the University of Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan and also in the Department of Economics and Agricultural Economics at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. In these institutions, he was responsible for teaching advanced economics courses to MPhil and PhD students and supervising the research of postgraduate students. In addition to academic institutions, he has also worked in development and in positions ranging from research to manager in different organisations, where he was involved in the formulation, implementation and management of research and development programmes at different scales. These organisations include Sungi Development Foundation in Abbottabad, Pakistan, the Agricultural Credit Department of MCB Bank Limited in Pakistan, AIT Consulting and the School of Environment, Resources and Development at AIT in Thailand.
Dr. Hussain has been actively involved in research on food and nutrition security, agricultural credit, poverty, mountain economy, smallholder farming, conservation agriculture, urban water, and renewable energy. He has published book chapters and technical reports as well as several articles in peer-reviewed international journals. He is also a member of the editorial board of the journals PLOS ONE and Humanities & Social Sciences Communications-(Nature).
Dr. Hussain has been involved in regional and intergovernmental assessments. He was lead author of the chapter ‘Food and Nutrition Security in the Hindu Kush Himalaya: Unique Challenges and Niche Opportunities’ in The Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment: Mountains, Climate Change, Sustainability and People’. He is also a contributing author of the Cross-Chapter 5 "Mountains" of the IPCC AR6 WGII.
