Brief Bio

Dr. Stefanny studied Environmental Engineering at the University Francisco José de Caldas in Bogota, Colombia where she graduated in 2013 and 2 years later she specialized in natural resources management. Stefanny has researched the linkages between tourism and rural development and participated in different regional projects in Colombia related to forests and their role in the ecological structure in urban and regional models. Her part of the experience includes governmental positions at the municipal, regional, and national levels, mostly related to the advocacy of decision-making processes to address climate change adaptation/mitigation strategies.

As a Coordinator of the Climate Adaptation Group in Colombia's Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, Dr. Stefanny was responsible for aligning international cooperation with national priorities on resilience and adaptation. She participated in the first strategies developed in the context of Colombia's NDC update. In 2019, Stefanny joined the Master's program in Urban and Regional Development Planning and Management with a focus on the context of developing countries at the Technical University of Dortmund. In order to contribute to the governance arena and its role in decision making for climate adaptation in intermediary cities (i-cities), Stefanny approached the Pwani region in Tanzania during her thesis "The role of secondary towns in the climate change adaptation governance. An analysis of the Pwani region in Tanzania".

In 2021, Stefanny was the author of the international report: a Colombian case study for "Living with deltas: climate adaptation in the world's deltas"; Global Center on Adaptation 2021. Since 2022, she has been working with BioCarbon Registry as a Business Development Manager in a global program for GHG projects that promote the sustainable use of vulnerable ecosystems such as high mountains, natural savannas and continental wetlands, recognizing their potential to deliver positive environmental and social impacts.

The contribution of GHG projects can also be the vehicle for achieving goals in other agendas such as social empowerment, gender equality and biodiversity. Today, as Programme Director, Stefanny leads the global strategies to achieve the programme's goals and expand its services around the world. She also aims to contribute to the innovation and drive new frameworks for the BioCarbon Registry, such as the Biodiversity Standard and its methodology for demonstrating net biodiversity gains from conservation initiatives.
