Brief Bio

Taylor Powrie studied Natural Resource Science for his undergraduate degree and conducted a thesis project analyzing the impact of cumulative forest disturbance on watershed discharge. He is currently working on a collaborative research project for Masters, with Adams Lake First Nation, Shuswap Watershed Council and Thompson Rivers University, to assess the hydrological and ecological impact of glacier recession within a large-scale watershed.

In Tay’s early academic career, his research focus was on sustainable agricultural practices and food security. He had the opportunity to study internationally at Royal Thimphu College, where he learned about agricultural systems and water management in the Himalayas, while working with the National Organic Program of Bhutan. This experience provided him with insight on the importance of water management at a landscape level. Tay has since broadened his field of study to focus on how cumulative landscape disturbances affect biophysical and hydrological processes within ecosystems, and in turn how these effects may impact communities and habitat. He is interested in applied research that is informed and driven by community priorities to ensure study outcomes are integrated into management plans. This broad interest has allowed him to diversify his research and work endeavors. Tay currently co-manages a collaborative wetland restoration project that aims to enhance habitat for species at risk within a sensitive grassland ecosystem, while co-coordinating a marsh monitoring program, and conducting an analysis of historical and future hydrological regimes within a large-scale watershed. Additionally, he is a sessional instructor at Thompson Rivers University in the Natural Resource Science department, where he teaches Range Management and Watershed Management seminars.
