Association for Nature Conservation - Machaon International is an independent, non-for-profit and internationally active organization established in 2008 by two nature enthusiasts – Jozef Bednar and Svetlana Belova.
Our mission is to support national parks and other protected areas as guardians of nature and traditional culture and as places of inspiration and admiration for humankind. We accomplish our mission through international cooperation projects, capacity building activities and facilitation of knowledge transfers. Over the years, Machaon has been involved in 15 international projects, mostly helping protected areas in post-Soviet countries by funds provided by the European Union. It has rich experience and special skills in fund-raising, project management, international exchange, organization of study-tours, wilderness expeditions and art events.
At the moment, we have three ongoing projects. One project, called Creative Mountains, brings together innovative approaches and creative people in order to facilitate inter-cultural collaboration, to support transnational mobility and to promote the unique cultural heritage of rural mountain areas of Armenia, Georgia and Slovakia. The second one, called Living Landscape, strives to prepare a computer-generated design for nature-friendly measures in wetland restoration and increase of water retention capacity in the selected valuable landscapes near Poprad. Since February 2022, we have also engaged in helping Ukrainian war refugees and run a project called Tatras help Ukraine.
Since 2020 we also address looming climate change and unbridled suburbanisation affecting the Tatra Mountains area. We started an initiative I love Green Tatras to sensitize the public to environmental issues which will shape the future of the region.
